A true classic has a design that transcends time, while still maintaining an original aesthetic and appeal, as is the case with Harry Winstons Midnight Collection. The new model features three arches, a tribute to the Houses heritage and New York flagship salon. It also has a date indicator and a moon display, offering precise information in the most sophisticated fashion.Midnight Date Moonphase Automatic 42mmThe art of composition Off-setting its date and complications, is an aesthetic decision embedded in Harry Winstons design DNA. The Midnight Date Moonphase reinterprets the Houses signature elements and functions with excentered Hours and Minutes, date, and moonphase counters, so subtle ...
Just about 4-5 months before the SIHH, Cartier announced a new mens watch that comes in three different versions listening to the name Ronde Croisiere Collection. This time it is not a new watch from the ‘Fine Watch Making collection, these will be presented in January, but a more affordable, main stream time piece, created to accompany you literally anywhere. The differences between the three models are aesthetic only. There is a version with a gold plated bezel, a version with an ADLC coating and a steel model, all sharing the same automatic caliber.Cartier?Ronde Croisiere CollectionThe watch is a masculine straight forward time only timepiece with a date function as the only compli...
The most precious piece in a WIS collection has to be the heirloom watch, a timepiece passed down by a close relative. Whether that watch is a Daytona or a 1930s Gruen Curvex, it makes no difference at all. The story behind it, the connection to that special person, the moments you shared or the great anecdotes you heard of him/her by other family members – if you had no chance to meet the owner in person – are all factors that play a major role in this highly emotional game. Monetary value in this case is absolutely irrelevant. I do not have any in my collection yet; mind you my father wears a Casio (his choice for pretty much most of his life). Im guessing my grandfathers Polj...
The best thing of being a journalist when talking about watches is the wide variety of beautiful timepieces we get to test-drive. A big part of writing a watch review of course is that we receive the item, wear it for a few days, weeks (in this case months) and then pen our impressions, thoughts, and feelings in connection to the watch. Is it comfortable? Is it worth the money? Is it, God forbid, accurate? These, and more, are all question we all have to keep in mind. As you know we?tend to focus on the affordable watches, wed like to call it the sub-$5000 category. While you can argue that even $5000 is not affordable but astronomically high for some, it is indeed an amount that can get you...
I mentioned several weeks ago that #TBT would begin exploring some different areas. Hopefully, with recent discussions on pieces such as the King Seiko and Oysterdate Precision, weve taken solid steps towards fulfilling that message. Today s subject will continue to push the boundaries for this series. Yes, this weeks #TBT will likely prove controversial because the selected watch contains something unique: a battery. Despite my general aversion to anything quartz, I actually find todays piece very attractive and interesting. Plus, it combines two of my favorite horological subjects: chronographs and Seikos. Grab your parachute pants and journey with me back to the era of arcade games and s...
Our anniversary?edition of Watch Strap Review Part 10. adds yet another country to the long list of craftsmen. We are going north this time to Scandinavia. The strap maker Im about to introduce to you hails in Sweden and our very own Michael introduced his work to me. How could I miss him for so long? Anyways, alls well that ends well C as the poet says. I got in touch with Michael (the strap guy, not the watch guy) who turns out to be a very nice, down to earth fellow. He prepared 2 straps exclusively for this watch strap review and some real nice ones too. Ok, enough of the introduction, ladies and gentlemen please meet:MJLeatherLike many guys from the past Michael also does this as a hobb...

Let me be honest here. Dead honest. When you think about a mechanical divers watch, Edox is not the brand that first comes to mind. I am pretty sure this also applies to you (assuming you don t work for Edox in some way). When I think of Edox, I have to think about those ultra slim watches they advertised in the 1990s. I remember joining a business diner with my step-father and his business partner had this very thin Edox strapped on his wrist. Already interested in watches in those days, I asked him about the watch and he told me that the reason for buying the Edox was indeed the fact that it was very thin. That was basically my one and only experience with the brand until recently. The box ...
Last month Robert-Jan returned from the impressive Hautlence VORTEX presentation, that took place at the Hautlence headquarters and brought me back the new Invictus 03 for a review. I only knew the watch from the first model, the Invictus Morphos that was designed by Guillaume Tetu together with the famous sportsman & artist eric Cantona. But I only had seen and handled that?model briefly during the presentation last year. The Morphos with its bright blue wings on the dial is a real eye catcher, but a bit too flashy to my liking. The new INVICTUS 03 is in fact the same watch, but with a complete different look, due to the DLC coated case and the open worked honey comb dial.Hautlence?INVIC...
I like to talk a lot about good, clean, and effective design on #TBT.Its something that looks easy, but is often difficult to master. As Ive mentioned, I think that Seiko and display this mastery time and time again in the bulk of their pieces. To me, creating good design not only takes into account the layout of various characteristics on a timepiece, but also blends materials, textures, hues and proper proportion into the effort. Its a primary reason why that $35, 3-6-9, drug store three-hander lacks the same appeal of what is likely a very similar, at a distance at least, watch costing multitudes more. Today, well take a look at a good example of pleasing design: a very simple, yet sport...
Our contributor Gerard has been a NOMOS retailer in The Netherlands for many years, until he decided to sell pre-owned and vintage only. Every time I was in his shop in The Hague, I made sure to check-out the NOMOS section as I love their clean designs. However, it took me until 2012 before I visited their manufacture in Glashtte and from that moment on, I appreciate this small independent brand from Germany even more.As printed in the NOMOS Glashtte – Das grosse Universallexikon book that NOMOS published in 2006 (also in English, and even if you don t own a NOMOS watch, you NEED this fantastic book. Order it here.): Glashtte is not a company, it is a city. A small city at least. Fo...
This has been a long time coming…? It was April when I was in San Diego and had the chance to meet some fellow watch enthusiasts over some IPA s on a Friday night.? We published an interview with Erik Akin of DECAMP Goods that struck a chord with a lot of our readers.? Today, we ll take a look at the final interview from my San Diego visit.? This time, though, we ll focus on a different kind of accessory: the watch winder. To be fair, I don t own a watch winder, but that s primarily due to the fact that I try to change watches daily and it, umm, takes me a little while to come back around to any given piece.? That s not to say, though, that I don t see the point.? Honestly, and this is ...
This is not your typical watch story or product announcement. For starters, this timepiece will never be available for purchase by the general public; its only owners will remain in the shadows, their identities hidden by codenames and operator numbers. This is a story featuring high-stake missions, a unit trained to operate in unison, and overwhelming brotherhood. This is what happens when Linde Werdelin partners with Conventus Ranae, the formal association of Fr?mandskorpset.Fr?mandskorpset, literally the Frogman Corps, is the Naval Special Operations Force in the Danish Military. They are highly trained, beginning with a tough selection programme. Since inception in 1957, only some 300 men...
Dear fans of #TBT, Im afraid this weeks issue will be a bit different. As Mike is on his much-deserved holiday C from the series C I was asked to do the next article. It will lack the cool, suave Florida talk, the praising of 60s watchmaking which we all love to read about and even the endless lines discussing?the smallest details on a piece-pun intended, Mike ?? This week, though, we feature a superstar from a bygone era: a time when design was mostly to serve function, not aesthetics. The company is none other than Angelus (the original one, not this) and the watch is their legendary chronograph, the Angelus caliber 215.?I cant recall the first time that I saw this watch. I remember, thoug...
Everyone who knows a bit about Omega watches is familiar with the Constellation collection. Today, perhaps, it is associated with the design characteristics of four gold claws and bi-coloured bracelets, but it was Omega s flaghsip collection during the 1950 s and 1960 s. I ve actually have said it before, but the Constellation is the watch that started my interest in watches a long time ago. In my family there are a couple of these vintage Constellations and I inherited one from my grandfather, who bought it in 1969 and wore it for the next 42 years: every single day.The Omega Constellations, especially the vintage models, have become quite collectible, despite their small size. It is a perf...
Theres no doubt that Frankfurt is becoming a watch shoppers paradise. Aside from several prominent multi-brand retailers, the city now features boutiques from Omega, Jaeger Le-Coultre, Patek Philippe (as part of Bucherer), Hublot, TAG Heuer, Sinn and, the latest, Seiko. The Japanese mega brand is the focus of our story today as a new boutique has recently opened in mainland Europes financial center. A view of the showcases along the right wallEurope has been undergoing some serious heat, and Friday, June 17th was no exception. I met up with Robert-Jan in the early evening in front of the new Seiko boutique and the temperatures were still in the mid 90s (mid 30s for the Celsius-inclined). We ...
Yesterday, a Frederique Constant retailer in The Hague was the World s first in delivering the Frederique Constant Smartwatch to a number of their clients. 10 watches to be exact, were waiting for their new owners in the boutique of Juwelier van Willegen in The Hague. To celebrate, Van Willegen invited the new owners to come and pick-up the watch from their boutique and have a drink with the others and talk (smart)watches. We already had a look at the Frederique Constant Smartwatch here?and soon will do a hands-on review ourself, as my colleague Blaise received his watch today as well for a couple of weeks of wearing and testing. On a desk, they laid out all models available. Tom Bekker from V...

Please meet Equus Leather.About EquusThe beauty of this series is that we get to meet so many interesting craftsmen from across the globe. We can be very certain that most of the sports and tool watches end up on the wrist of someone who spends most of his days in artificial light, behind a desk and staring at spreadsheets or other boring software. A glance at their sports or tool watch might make them day dream for a few moments how it would be to really have to rely on your watch! Under water, in the forrest, in the sky, on the Moon, as a soldier in action or even as a three digit secret agent. For most brands this is OK of course, as they ve sold the watch and that s that. Although their watches might be up for the task, it will stay at day dreaming for most owners. For some brands, this must be a bit frustrating though. They...
