New: The Hanhart 417 Ti Desert Pilot Limited Editions

February 03, 2015

While Hanhart is known for its historically inspired pilot s chronographs, today s latest model takes its cues from a very different form of motor-powered conveyance. The 417 Ti Desert Pilot Limited Edition is rooted in desert rally racing. As we ll see, though, this isn t just a dial color variation. Plus, the watch is available in two sizes.Hanhart has become a fan favorite here on Fratello with its well-specced, approachable watches. Furthermore, the brand offers pieces equipped with highly accurate, modern manual-winding movements. In other words, the typically hard-to-please enthusiast set can take solace that there are contemporary watches available with classic touches. The new Desert Pilot models follow this pattern, but as we ll see, there s a special lightweight touch that wouldn t be out of place on a race car.The Hanhart 417 Ti Desert Pilot Limited EditionsHanhart s newest releases come in 39mm or 42mm case configurations. The former has a 46mm lug-to-lug measurement, while the larger piece s 49mm length is still reasonable. Both watches have a 13.6mm profile, inclusive of the highly domed sapphire crystals with antireflective coating. Where this watch differs from other 417 models is the case material. For the first time, Hanhart offers the watches in matte Grade 5 titanium, a new look that brings a slightly darker finish.Regarding other specifications, these watches are unlike vintage(-inspired) pilot s watches meant for topside functionality. In fact, with their rotating external timing bezels and 100m depth ratings, the watches could technically be used to time underwater activities. Plus, with the standard textured tan or black 21mm or 19mm rubber straps and titanium pin buckles, the pieces are ready for any weather situation.Dials inspired by a sandy landscapeThe Desert Pilot carries the familiar look of other 417 models but ushers in a new color palette. Sand-colored dials are paired with black numerals and details. As mentioned, the colorway is inspired by the desert and the racing forays sponsored by Hanhart, including the Dakar Rally and Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. The painted hour numerals are coated with Super-LumiNova, but Hanhart is quick to note that their luminous properties are less magnified than on other, lighter-colored models. Similarly, the central hands also contain Super-LumiNova. Other details include a running 60-second sub-dial and a 30-minute totalizer. The historic Hanhart logo makes an appearance, and, true to its pilot intentions, the dial proclaims its flyback functionality.Powered by the AMT5100 MBoth Desert Pilot models use the AMT5100 M manual-winding movement. As a reminder, Sellita produces the AMT calibers in a special department. In addition to the flyback complication, the movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a minimum 58-hour power reserve. Furthermore, Hanhart ensures deviation of 0 to +8 seconds per day across all positions. Both the 39mm and 42mm editions have screw-in titanium case backs with sapphire crystals. Each movement has a blued column wheel and striping on the mainplate.Availability and pricingHanhart has priced the new 417 Ti Desert Pilot at $2,990. This price applies to the 39mm and 42mm models and is only several hundred euros more than the stainless versions. Perhaps the only downside is that each piece is individually numbered and limited to 200 pieces. Still, that s hopefully enough availability to satisfy potential collectors. In my opinion, this is a great addition to the lineup, and it presents a unique approach to the 417. The darker case works very well with the lightly colored dial. Therefore, I expect a positive reception of these pieces.
