New: Parmigiani Tonda PF Micro-Rotor In Steel- Gold- And Blue

February 18, 2013

Launched in 2021, the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor set the tone for Parmigiani Fleuriers renewed design language. Its combination of a thin case, detailed finishing, and a guilloche dial established the clean aesthetic that now defines the brand. Today, we get a new version in steel and gold with a blue dial. This new version of the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor introduces a new combination of materials and colors. It is crafted from stainless steel and 18K rose gold and paired with a Stone Blue dial that shifts between gray and deep mineral blue depending on the light. Lets have a closer look! The new Tonda PF Micro-Rotor in contextWhen Parmigiani Fleurier first introduced the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor line in 2021, it launched in steel with a platinum bezel and a warm-gray dial. It provided an original and fresh take on the classical (and perhaps tired) theme of the integrated-bracelet sports watch. That 40mm debut model already housed the PF703 micro-rotor caliber we see make a recurrence here. Design-wise, the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor embodied the brands view on quiet luxury. This new steel and rose gold version doesnt change those fundamentals. It retains the elegant case shape and the ultra-slim profile. What it adds is a visual contrast of warm and cool tones with rose gold and blue. You may also argue that it trades some of the quiet luxury philosophy for a little bit of exuberance. Luckily, it does so without sacrificing style and elegance.Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro-Rotor specsThe case has a 40mm diameter and a lithe 7.8mm profile. It combines polished and satin-finished stainless steel with 18K rose gold accents and a knurled bezel. A sapphire crystal on both sides and a 100m water resistance rating make it supremely versatile. The integrated bracelet continues the two-tone theme, alternating polished and brushed surfaces in the familiar flowing silhouette.Inside ticks the in-house PF703 caliber. This ultra-thin automatic movement features a 22K rose gold micro-rotor decorated with Grain dOrge (barley grain) guilloche. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offering a 48-hour power reserve, the movement is beautifully finished with C?tes de Geneve, perlage, and beveled bridges. The micro-rotor helps give the movement a 3.07mm thickness, enabling the watchs very slender overall profile. The Stone Blue dial features a hand-guilloche Grain dOrge pattern, applied rose-gold indexes, and skeletonized delta-shaped hands above it. This dial s shifting tone, from luminous blue to smoky gray, lends the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor a quiet dynamism that plays beautifully with changing light. Or, at least, thats what the press blurb promises. I have yet to see it in real life. Having plenty of experience with Parmigianis creations, though, I have no reason to doubt it.Initial impressionsI am a big fan of the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Micro-Rotor and its siblings in the collection. I particularly appreciate the non-conformist design. The proportions are slightly odd, making your brain work just a bit harder to grasp them. The super-wide bracelet and the short hour markers, for instance, may seem slightly off at first. I find, however, that they conspire to create just the right amount of visual tension to make it interesting. It is a little bit of an acquired taste that doesnt aim to please everyone. I love that! The template seems to translate into different materials and colors very well. The earlier all-rose-gold versions lifted it from quiet luxury to full-on decadence. This new bicolor model, at CHF 28,200, sits somewhere in between, both in price and style. The blue dial looks considered and tasteful to me, adding a touch of freshness and air.For my money, I would probably still stick with the steel and platinum model. I think the design and all the different metal textures are presented best on that version. Still, the Tonda PF Micro-Rotor wears this new steel, rose gold, and blue guise very well. What do you think of the latest addition to Parmigiani Fleurier s Tonda PF Micro-Rotor line?
