In 2010, Laurent Ferrier launched his independent career with the Classic Tourbillon, a watch that immediately won the Mens Watch Prize at the Grand Prix dHorlogerie de Geneve. That first creation set the tone for the Geneva-based brand - understated designs hiding serious horological substance. Now, 15 years later, Laurent Ferrier celebrates this milestone with a new anniversary edition, the Classic Tourbillon Teal.The Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon is part of the brands Serie Atelier and is limited to just five pieces. It stays true to the original concept while introducing subtle but meaningful updates. A platinum case, a teal Grand Feu enamel dial, and a refreshed movement finish set this reference apart. It is both a tribute to the brand s origins and a statement of its ongoing evolution. Lets have a closer look!Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal specificationsThe generous 41mm case of the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal is crafted from 950 platinum, a first for the collection. Its soft, pebble-like 12.5mm profile references 19th-century pocket watches, complete with a generously sized, ball-shaped crown. The case also has a 50mm lug-to-lug span and a 30m water resistance rating. Domed sapphire crystals on both sides complete the package.Inside ticks the hand-wound caliber LF619.01, the same double-balance-spring tourbillon movement that powered the 2010 version. It runs at 21,600 beats per hour and provides an 80-hour power reserve. The finishing, however, has received an update, including horizontal satin brushing with a ruthenium treatment on the bridges, as well as rhodium-plated wheels and engravings. I love how this makes a statement that the brand has evolved and maintains relevance today. The tourbillon remains visible only through the back, in keeping with Ferriers philosophy of discretion.The dial is executed in teal Grand Feu enamel on an 18K white gold base plate. Roman numerals in white enamel and a sky-blue railway minute track complement the color, while a small seconds register sits at 6 oclock. Its beveled and polished white gold flange, together with matching sky-blue enamel markers, provides depth. Assegai-shaped white gold hands for the hours and minutes and a needle-shaped hand for the seconds complete a very subtle but appealing aesthetic.The ultimate stealth flex - a hidden tourbillonPatented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801 to counter the effects of gravity on pocket watches, the tourbillon is one of watchmakings most celebrated complications. In most modern wristwatches, it has become a visual spectacle, placed front and center on the dial. Laurent Ferrier takes a different approach.In the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal, the cage is tucked away beneath the dial, serving precision rather than theatrics. The mechanism only reveals itself through the sapphire window on the back.The result is a movement that connects traditional, historical watchmaking to modern watch design. The complication is there, but it doesnt reveal itself to anyone but the owner. That makes this LF the ultimate stealth flex, for lack of a more dignified term. Of course, this is by no means exclusive to Laurent Ferrier, but I feel it matches the brands character very well.Initial impressions of the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon TealYou may know me to be something of a Laurent Ferrier fanboy. I love the brands subtle approach to super-high-end watchmaking. There is a humility and restraint to these watches that I find supremely appealing. In fact, if I were in the socio-economic target audience, I wouldnt be surprised if Laurent Ferrier became my go-to watchmaker.On to todays specific release, the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal. As you may expect, I love the concept of a tourbillon that isnt on display. I also love the look of it as you turn the watch over. As I alluded to before, I think LFs movement finishing is superb. The calibers look distinctly modern and fresh with a clear identity. Ferrier managed to update his styling over the years, which I feel is crucial to remain relevant. It shows that he isnt simply following in the tradition of those who came before but continuing that trajectory.The teal is absolutely magnificent. It is a tricky color to get right, but LFs enamel-over-white-gold version looks deep and captivating. The complementary blue and white on the dial are equally well-chosen to bring everything to life. Honestly, I have only one quarrel with this watch - its size. It is quite substantial for such a minimal design.Closing thoughts on the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon TealAll in all, the Laurent Ferrier Classic Tourbillon Teal feels like a worthy successor to the original Classic Tourbillon. It is a reminder of where the brand started and how far it has come in 15 years. Limited to only five numbered pieces and priced at CHF 195,000 before tax, it is, however, a highly exclusive offering.
