Last week, I reported on a new high-end Citizen Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition with a beautiful green washi (Japanese paper) dial. In the same week, Citizen also introduced two new watches powered by a brand-new Eco-Drive caliber. The new lightweight Photon models feature state-of-the-art dials that combine an intriguing design with the latest in Citizen s Eco-Drive technology. Let s find out more about the new Citizen Photon limited editions.Just one glance at the two new Citizen Eco-Drive Photons, and you ll know the dials offer something special. The Photon was inspired by scientific research into light, resulting in an innovative design that reflects the evolution of Citizen s Eco-Drive technology. This year marks Eco-Drive s 50th anniversary, which Citizen will celebrate throughout 2026. But while the main draw of last week s Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Edition was the classy green dial, these two new Photon watches actually take Eco-Drive to the next level. The story of the Citizen Eco-Drive 50th Anniversary Photon modelsThe best thing about Eco-Drive is its everyday practicality, making these watches a joy to own. That s the main reason my dad actually bought one alongside his vintage Omega Seamaster De Ville. The idea behind Eco-Drive technology is that it transforms light into electrical energy. While it s easy to assume that this requires actual sunlight, even dim indoor light can be converted into electrical energy. Citizen first introduced the technology in 1976 and later named it Eco-Drive.1976 Citizen Crystron Solar CellThat brings us to the two new watches. Citizen chose the name Photon as it refers to the quantum unit of light energy. It s a fitting name for two watches that stand out for multiple reasons. Let s dive into the design and specs first. Both variants are made of lightweight Super Titanium. The first (ref. BJ6560-53W) has a silver Duratect titanium carbide coating. The second (ref. BJ6569-59X), however, offers a more exotic, distinct two-tone look thanks to black Duratect DLC and amber-yellow Duratect coatings. The cases and cutting-edge dials of the Citizen PhotonBoth Photon models have a 39.6 9.9mm case with a matching integrated bracelet featuring a micro-adjustment system integrated into the clasp. Protecting each dial is a dual-curved sapphire crystal with the brand name and Eco-Drive moniker printed on it.The design of the dials below represents light passing through them, embodying Eco-Drive s actual function. These dials feature two superimposed metal plates with wave-shaped and circular cutouts. These allow a view of the textured, colored foil beneath, which displays various hues from different angles when light reflects off it.The outer ring holding the luminous hour markers and printed minute track also serves as the dial cover and adds to the layered presence. Hovering over the dial are the lume-filled hour and minute hands and a colored seconds hand. For the titanium model, it is gold, and for the two-tone variant, it is purple. The new Citizen Eco-Drive E036 movementHiding behind the special 50th-anniversary case back of both watches is the new in-house caliber E036. This movement runs for 365 days on a full charge and is accurate to within 15 seconds per month. Thanks to this new caliber, the Citizen Eco-Drive Photon models blend practicality and modern technology, making them solid choices as worry-free daily wearers.Citizen will produce 5,000 pieces of each variant, ensuring fans can most likely get their hands on one of the two. The standard titanium model will retail for $895, whereas the two-tone version will cost $995. In addition to embodying the newest step in Citizen s Eco-Drive technology, these two new Photons are a stylish, modern duo of watches.I would love to check them out and take them for a test drive for a couple of days. Hopefully, we can make that happen in the near future. For now, I think it s safe to say that these two Photon models perfectly continue the 50th anniversary of Citizen s Eco-Drive technology. What do you think of them?
