Carl Suchy Sohne Presents The Waltz N1 Moll

It s probably been five years since I first went hands-on with one of Carl Suchy & S?hne s watches. It was a memorable experience because the watches struck me as modern yet somehow traditional. On the Waltz N1, classic dial elements came together with a unique seconds display and an elegant, contemporary case. When the press release for today s Waltz N1 Moll arrived in my inbox, I quickly volunteered to cover it.There aren t too many novel takes on the dress-watch genre, but the Carl Suchy & S?hne Waltz N1 has always struck me as a fairly distinct proposition. With its organically smooth case design that brings together both polished and media-blasted elements, it s on the edge of sporty. However, the dials frequently feature both horizontal and vertical guilloche finishing. These are combined with simple hands, indices, and drilled minute markers. These are decidedly old-world and more formal flourishes. Magically, nothing about these watches looks stodgy, and yet they d pair perfectly with a tuxedo at one of the many formal balls currently happening in Vienna. The Waltz N1 Moll doesn t introduce anything exceptionally new, but it s a lovely piece that s worth a look.The Carl Suchy & S?hne Waltz N1 MollThe inspiration behind the new Waltz N1 Moll stems from the waltz. This is the dance often associated with the Austrian capital and the associated balls that occur during winter. As someone who has attended two of these events, the announcement of the waltz also marks when I retire to the bar! When a powerfully emotional waltz is played in a minor key, it is called a Moll. Within the watch, the Moll is expressed by the contrasting black rotating seconds sub-dial. The disruption to the silver dial is meant to be minor yet powerful. Black DLC-coated steel is also used for the bezel and case back.SpecificationsThe Waltz N1 Moll is a 41.5mm stainless steel watch that is 9.3mm thick. The slim profile is thanks in part to the 2.6mm-slim Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier (VMF) 5401 micro-rotor automatic movement inside. Within the Carl Suchy workshops, the movement receives C?tes du Soleil finishing and adjustment to five positions. It also provides a power reserve of approximately 40 hours. The watch features sapphire crystals on both the front and back and is water resistant to 3 ATM. Either a standard black leather or alligator strap is available with a stainless steel folding buckle.Beautiful touchesI ve always enjoyed the case design of the Waltz N1 series. As mentioned, there s a clean modernity to it that separates it from a crowd of stodgy formal watches. The lugs are short, which helps offset the relatively large diameter. The downward-flowing profile on both case ends also ensures a nice fit. As another nice touch, the crown s knurling also repeats the guilloche pattern, and a black cap on top matches the bezel and case back. Of course, the brand s concave dial is on display in the Waltz N1 Moll. I ve seen similar examples in person, and the thin guilloche lines are lovely and come off as extremely precise. The rotating disc above 6 o clock is also a unique way to display the running seconds. In the brand s words, Its a tribute to the dancing rhythm of the Viennese Waltz C and to the Viennese savoir-vivre, where not every second counts.The Waltz N1 Moll - availability and final thoughtsCarl Suchy & S?hne isn t a large-scale producer. Consequently, the Waltz N1 Moll will only be available in a limited run of just 10 pieces. At $12,400, it falls within the premium category. I see it as a beautiful watch that includes a lovely movement. It also stands out in a sea of similar-looking dress watches.
